What do you do when your old mutants are no longer cool and hip? You make new ones! That's what Chris Claremont and Bob McLeod did back in 1982 with New Mutants, one of the very first comic book series to spinoff from the writers' highly successful run on Uncanny X-Men.
The series kicked off with an original graphic novel that introduced readers to a diverse young group of mutants who — much like their predecessors — were taken in by Charles Xavier as a class of students he would teach to control their powers. But that was only the beginning.
The original team consisted of Karma, Mirage, Sunspot, and Wolfsbane, and they added Cannonball to their ranks after their first adventure. But the team would continue to grow and add new characters to the X-world, becoming a touchstone of the Marvel Universe in its own right. The team added Magik, Magma, Boom-Boom, Cypher, Warlock, and many others to the roster, who would grow over the years into full-fledged X-Men, Avengers, and even one member of Nextwave.
New Mutants was where characters like Legion, Deadpool, and Cable were first introduced, and the latter's involvement would lead to the team being relaunched as X-Force in the early '90s, which would become a staple of the X-Men line. The original series is also acclaimed for the darker horror and sci-fi that became its niche under the pen of legendary artist Bill Sienkiewicz, an era and aesthetic that seems to be the inspiration for the upcoming film from Fox.
