Long before video game consoles had the capacity to deliver a full range of sounds, the game music still played a major role in setting the mood and tone. Even with only a few basic tools to work with inside the NES, classic titles like Super Mario Bros. and The Legend of Zelda had themes that are still popular to this day. Video game music has become an art form unto itself, and as part of SYFY WIRE's Music Month, it's time to honor seven of the very best gaming soundtracks.
Unsurprisingly, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time received a high spot on our list of essential video game soundtracks. All the Zelda games have great music, but Ocarina of Time actually integrated the music into the gameplay experience itself. Players needed to learn how to use the Ocarina, and it served a purpose within the story.
Among arcade games, Street Fighter II has a famously catchy soundtrack that simply can't be ignored. It's true that Guile's theme does go with everything, but the rest of the stage themes are also impressively composed. Somehow, the music is always well-suited for both the characters and the stages they inhabit.
Castlevania: Symphony of the Night is a prime example of a soundtrack enhancing the already enticing gameplay. The original Metroid's atmospheric score also seemed to bring out the best aspects of the alien environments.
