Ex-Mythbusters frontman Adam Savage is anywhere and everywhere these days, from masquerading in handcrafted costumes at comic conventions and testing products on his Tested online lab, to touring cavernous sets on Hollywood blockbusters like Alien: Covenant.
Savage most recently submerged himself into the dystopian world of Denis Villeneuve's Blade Runner 2049 when the famous techno-geek was cast as an extra in the promo short centering around Dave Bautista's rogue skinjob, Sapper Morton.
Directed by Morgan's Luke Scott, "2048: Nowhere to Run" takes place in a grimy, neon-kissed underground marketplace, with Bautista delivering contraband worms to an unsavory black market merchant named The Sultan, and getting into a bit of a tussle with street thugs afterwards.
Check out Savage as he gets outfitted with wardrobe and makeup before the cameras roll, ducking into the costuming tent where racks of pseudo-futuristic shirts, pants, coats, vests, and hoodies hang. Assistant costume designer Martine Gagnon decides on a layered look due to the film universe's cold, rainy climate and as the components of the costume are added, you can see Savage's geeky joy build before our eyes.
In makeup, he's dirtied up a bit with grime and soot brushed over his skin before being whisked off to the set and told that his character will be a blood-bag merchant.
It's a "don't blink or you'll miss him" moment when the final performance arrives, but it does reveal the extreme level of detail and crew size on something as simple as a 5-minute short. Have a look.
