Marvel’s flagship series Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is knee-deep in a virtual world where Hydra rules all, so we talked to the cast and crew about what else might be down that rabbit hole.
We caught up with stars Clark Gregg and Jason O’Mara, as well as producers Jed Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoen, to discuss the “Framework” arc that kicked off Tuesday night with the episode “What If.” The creative team said the story is an opportunity to explore questions of identity, and if these characters are just the sum of their experiences, or something more in the core of their being. They used Daisy and Simmons as a lens to explore this universe, tossing them in from the real world as they try to figure out where they stand.
Jason O’Mara has one of the most interesting arcs within the Framework, as he leads the resistance and the remnants of S.H.I.E.L.D. in this world. O’Mara said this reality gave him a chance to explore the potential within his character in a world where he wasn’t leveraged into lying to the public as leader of S.H.I.E.L.D. Basically, he gets to be the hero he always wanted to be.
New episodes of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. air Tuesday nights on ABC.
