Along with writing for TV shows like The 100, Julie and Shawna Benson are also leading DC Comics' acclaimed Batgirl and the Birds of Prey. We chatted them up about how they got into comics in the first place.
For Julie and Shawna, comic books were a family affair from a young age. The duo were introduced to the medium after rummaging around though their father's collection of everything from Silver Age superhero stories, movie adaptations (namely, the early Marvel Star Wars stuff) and old female-focused runs like Lois Lane and Patsy Walker.
They talk about how reading at a young age exposed them to other worlds and helped them create their own worlds. They also look at how the industry has changed and how comics can lead to friendships and connections thanks to the power of the Internet, and the way anyone can find a group to connect with about their shared loves and passions.
