There's a brand new hero on his way to The CW's slate of DC Comics properties, and this one is making it a family affair. Black Lightning is the newest hero to join the DC party over on the network, which also hosts Arrow, The Flash, Supergirl, and DC's Legends of Tomorrow.

Black Lightning follows Jefferson Pierce (Cress Williams), a former superhero who retired from vigilantism to protect his family. When we meet him in the first episode, he's created a nice career for himself as a school principal, and is raising two daughters. Until circumstances pull him back into his old life.

At San Diego Comic-Con this weekend, the cast and creators of Black Lightning spoke to SYFY WIRE about the new series, and what sets it apart from its CW counterparts. "It takes place in neighborhoods and communities that you hear about, but don't necessarily know about," said co-creator, Salim Akil, explaining that the series would not take place in the world of The Flash and Arrow. "And I think that that's what's gonna be exciting about it, is that we have an opportunity to have Black Lightning be a hero to a community that has been hero-less."

The series will also show the evolution of Black Lightning's two daughters as they discover their powers. "You see her develop her powers on the show," said China Anne McClain, who plays Jefferson's youngest daughter, Jennifer, aka Lightning. "So you can see how she goes from just normal teenager, messing around, to having to deal with this huge responsibility."
