For anyone who has ever longed for the return of the G1 Transformers, the Bumblebee prequel movie may be everything we hoped for and more. We recently attended the world premiere of Bumblebee, and the cast and producers behind the film were very excited about their contributions to the Transformers mythos. Leading lady Hailee Steinfeld was particularly proud that she got to have a song of her own on the soundtrack.
In Bumblebee, Steinfeld plays Charlie Watson, a teenage girl who finds and befriends Bumblebee in 1987, two decades before the events of the first Transformers movie. According to screenwriter Christina Hodson, the strength of this story is based on the relationship between the girl and her 'car.'
"It started with this very personal idea," noted Hodson. "Charlie is actually based upon my two nieces. And I think because I had such a personal connection to the character, it meant that even when we were doing the big explosions, and set pieces, and fights, I always had this core emotional heart that I could come back it. It was really my North star."
Given the early positive response to Bumblebee, it's not outlandish to suggest that more Transformers could get their own solo films. According to producer Tom DeSanto, Peter Cullen is already asking about a solo Optimus Prime movie!
"I think there's a lot of love left in these characters, and I think we got it back on track," said DeSanto. "I know Peter Cullen, the voice of Optimus Prime, wants his own. It's like 'where’s my solo movie?' But I don't know. Maybe for the next one, we'll get the gang all back together."
