You may not recognize her name, but surely when you hear her voice, you know exactly who Charlet Chung is. She plays D. Va in Blizzard Entertainment's hugely popular Overwatch game.
D. Va is one of the most popular characters in the game. A tank who is considerably nimble, D. Va has a mech suit that can self-detonate, killing everyone in sight. The character is extremely popular to cosplay, as both women and men (called D. Vo or D. Bro) show off their own take on the character.
D. Va's character, a South Korean eSports pro, has become a feminist icon in South Korea. In America, the pink pussy hats have become the symbol of feminist marches; in South Korea, it is D. Va's symbol. "Overwatch is very inclusive," Charlet says, telling us about characters of all shapes, sizes, sexual orientation, and species in the game.
Charlet has played video games her whole life, but admits that right now, she is just playing Overwatch, which she says helps her to keep up-to-date with all the game developments. D. Va is her main character, which she says helps every time she goes back to record new voice over.
In our conversation with Charlet at C2E2, we talk about Duck Hunt, being a girl in gaming, how to get more girls into gaming, and being a feminist icon.
