Cosplay took it to the next level at C2E2. And the level beyond that. And the level beyond that. And… let's just say to another planet.
After crowning winners at New York Comic Con and Emerald City Comic Con, Crown Championships of Cosplay came to Chicago to find one more mind-blowing cosplayer who would instantly join the other two regional champions when the national winner was announced right there on that stage.
The national winner gets to advance to the next phase, going up against creatures and characters from all over the world in the international competition. That's kind of an enormously big deal.
You can be sure the judges know what they're doing when you have the fate of the next national champion in the hands of names like Philip Odango aka Canvas Cosplay, Riddle (who you may know from SYFY's Heroes of Cosplay), Marvel Studios Head of Visual Development Ryan Meinerding, and enduring cosplay phenomenon Yaya Han.
So who (and what) showed up? Armor, Needlework and FX were the three categories in which contestants needed to blow the judges away. Expect armor that glows with LED lights, holographic displays of magic and unreal dresses. Ayesha from Guardians of the Galaxy was decked out in over 57,000 gold nailheads. Beetlejuice had a working carousel on his head that lit up. There were even some costumes like Gertrude from I Hate Fairyland and the Frost Dragon from Elder Scrolls vs. Skyrim that made it hard to believe there was an actual human under there.
Also, the creator of the Frost Dragon is House of 1,000 Glue Sticks. Best name ever. This kind of decision must have required a few aspirin.
