C2E2 was far from the first comic book convention for Milo Ventimiglia and Justin Hartley. As former stars of Heroes and Smallville, respectively, the duo have a lot of experience with genre fandom and enough geek cred to be on the con circuit for life. But now, Ventimiglia and Hartley have once again found success as co-stars on NBC's This Is Us, one of the rare network shows to become a breakout hit within the last decade.
At their This Is Us spotlight panel, Ventimiglia and Hartley shared their first reaction to the pilot episode of the series and recalled how relieved they were to portray ordinary people on this show. Ventimiglia said the rest of the cast and everyone involved with the show quickly realized how good the series was, and how protective they are of the production.
According to Ventimiglia, he and his co-star Mandy Moore react like a real married couple when talking about the way their characters (Jack and Rebecca) and their on-screen children are treated on screen. Ventimiglia also recalled his first time meeting Moore while they were testing for the show. He also stated that they worked on their chemistry together to convincingly portray realistic and even flawed characters.
For Hartley, he seized upon the notion of the successful and wealthy Kevin as the loneliest man in a room full of people. Hartley said that Kevin surrounds himself with things that don't really matter in order to fill a void in himself and avoid dealing with his family strife.
There's even more to come in the full panel from C2E2, which you can watch below!
