It's been a whirlwind convention for the cast of Geek & Sundry's Critical Role. In addition to holding two panels at C2E2 and meeting numerous fans throughout the show, Matt Mercer, Liam O'Brien, Sam Riegel, Marisha Ray, Taliesin Jaffe, and Travis Willingham took the time to join SYFY WIRE's Whitney Moore on the Live Stage to dive into the origin story of the Vox Machina.
According to O'Brien, the start of their Dungeons & Dragons game was never meant to be an ongoing thing. They each assumed it was only going to happen once, but they enjoyed it so much that it became a regular part of their lives. In fact, fans have only seen three years out of the five-year campaign. The cast lived with their characters for half a decade, and it left a major impression on all of them.
Ray credits "Mother of Sundries" Felicia Day for suggesting the campaign could become a streaming show on Geek & Sundry. From there, it's been a wild ride. The cast recently started a second campaign with brand-new characters, and they're already being embraced by the fans, with a few cosplayers as well.
When asked about his talents as a DM, Mercer readily admitted he's been doing it for two decades. However, he suggested a few other DMs to watch for aspiring Dungeon Masters to pick up a few tricks for their games. Additionally, the cast spoke passionately about the therapeutic aspects of D&D and why it is accessible for everyone.
