Comic writer Nick Spencer is running ‘books on several heavy hitters in the Marvel Universe, so we caught up with him to chat about everything from Astonishing Ant-Man to the fallout from Steve Rogers’ “Hail Hydra” shocker.

Spencer walks us through the extensive setup for the “Hail Hydra” story in Captain America: Steve Rogers, and how they started laying the foundation more than a year and a half ago, including setting the board in the Standoff event set at Pleasant Hill. He also chimes in on the fan reaction, noting they’re used to seeing comic book fans rage — but the entire cultural zeitgeist was a bit of a surprise, but considering the timing with Captain America: Civil War, it wasn’t a shock.

Looking toward his other books, Spencer said they’ll be giving Sam Wilson: Captain America’s supporting cast a chance to breathe with some side stories focused on D-Man, Misty Knight and the new Falcon — all leading back to a major Sam Wilson story. Spencer’s excellent Astonishing Ant-Man run is also preparing to wind down, and he said they want to get back into the meat of that character before saying goodbye.
