Freeform is getting ready to launch the new sci-fi series Beyond, and it comes from a few modern-day genre greats. So we asked them why this should be our new “Must Watch” series.

The series follows a young man who spends several years in a coma and wakes up to realize he has incredible abilities. Behind the scenes, it comes from producer Tim Kring (Heroes) and producer David Eick (Battlestar Galactica). The two pitched the story as one ambitious effort, with Eick comparing it to something as ambitious and rich as a Tolkien novel. We also talk to star Burkely Duffield about the journey his character will go on during the first season.

The series’ creator Adam Nussdorf also stops by to tell the story of the show’s conception. Turns out he put the pitch together as a writing sample, and the studio liked it so much they eventually picked it up for development as a full-fledged series. Not bad for a spec concept.

Beyond will premiere on Jan. 2, 2017, and also be available to stream in full on the Freeform app.
