Fans were decidedly mixed on the big screen adaptation of Assassinâs Creed, but it turns out the movie could've actually been a whole lot darker. Like, we're taking bleak, folks.
Spoilers ahead for the Assassin's Creed ending, and the alternate Assassin's Creed ending!
In a featurette framed around the film's original ending, director Justin Kurzel explains how pretty much everyone died in the original cut of the film (while in the theatrical release, a few more assassins survived to stick around for the sequels that are definitely not going to happen). Initially, it was just Cal Lynch (Michael Fassbender) left standing when the screen faded to black, and the alternate ending shows all his cohorts being cut down in the climactic battle.
It's an interesting look at how those final moments changed, though if you've ever played an Assassin's Creed game, it's no surprise they were originally looking to go a bit bleak with the finale.
Assassinâs Creed hits Digital HD on March 10 and Blu-ray on March 21. Check out the original ending below.
