For over a decade now, the heroic sword-wielding rodents of Mouse Guard have been setting the high-water mark for all-ages fantasy comics. Series creator David Petersen has woven epic tales of the furry pint-sized denizens of this medieval world, focusing on the fearless order of warrior-explorers known as the Mouse Guard. Their exploits have earned them a spot alongside the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Miyamoto Usagi in the ranks of beloved anthropomorphic animal legends.

Their success is due in large part to Petersen’s beautiful, lushly detailed artwork and endearing character designs, which is why SYFY WIRE was excited to have the multi-Eisner Award-winning artist come by and do a sketch for us earlier this year at San Diego Comic-Con. He walks us through his process in creating an image of a member of the Mouse Guard, from pencils to inks, giving a firsthand look at how the mousy magic happens.

So check out the video below, and stay tuned to SYFY WIRE for more behind-the-scenes looks at your favorite artists.
