The wait for Deadpool 2 is over. The Merc With a Mouth is finally back with more of everything that made the first film such a wild success among comic book fans, including bigger action, more R-rated and irreverent jokes, more superhero characters, and… a song by Celine Dion.
SYFY WIRE’s Mike Avila was on hand for the Deadpool 2 red carpet event in New York City to interview the stars of the movie. As you can see in this video, our intrepid reporter spoke with Deadpool himself, star Ryan Reynolds, Terry Crews (Bedlam), Lewis Tan (Shatterstar), Julian Dennison (Russell, aka Firefist), Brianna Hildebrand (Negasonic teenage Warhead), writer Rhett Reese, and producer Simon Kinberg.
First up was Reynolds who spoke about how they actually came up with the uninspiring title for Deadpool 2. “We really wanted to distinguish the movie from Deadpool 1, and we felt like that was the most striking contrast,” Reynolds joked.
Crews then explained why he hadn’t done a comic book movie before. Basically, it had to do with several things including timing, some of the projects not being right, and the lack of black characters.
Reese then touched upon the characters surrounding Wade Wilson in the film. “You absolutely need straight men to play off Deadpool,” he told us. “People who he can irritate and antagonize and make their lives miserable, so adding Cable helped, adding Domino helped. And then also characters who had a little bit different relationships to him like Peter who’s kind of in awe of him and thinks he’s cool; Dopinder who wants to be him. So everybody’s got their own little take on Deadpool and seeing them all bounce off each other is probably the most fun thing.”
The cast also spoke about trying not to break scene while filming with Reynolds (who’s always hilarious), doing a lot of ad-libs, and the Fox superhero movie being shrouded in secrecy. Check out our video for more, and don’t forget to run (not walk) to see Deadpool 2 this weekend.
