Watch del Toro's special intro to Pacific Rim's Japanese trailer

Guillermo del Toro knows his new movie owes a lot to Japan.

We've already seen images of a monster-ravaged Tokyo from the Pacific Rim set, Japanese actress Rinko Kikuchi is one the film's principal stars, and -- most notably -- del Toro named the otherworldly beasts that populate his film "Kaiju," after the cult-favorite genre of Japanese cinema that gave us creations like Godzilla, Mothra and King Ghidorah. Plus, there are all those pretty mechs.

So, to acknowledge all these Japanese influences, del Toro recorded a special video intro to the Japanese trailer for Pacific Rim. The footage in the actual trailer is pretty much the same stuff we've already seen here in the States, but it's nice to see del Toro take the time to highlight Japan's prominent place in his big American blockbuster. Check out the Japanese trailer, with del Toro's introduction, below.

Pacific Rim hits theaters July 12.
