Over a decade ago, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson was rumored to be attached to play Black Adam in the Shazam! movie, before the project fell apart. But in 2017, Johnson was officially signed to headline his own Black Adam film independent of Shazam! or any other DC Extended Universe adaptation. In the interim, Zachary Levi’s Shazam! adaptation has hit the fast track and is coming to theaters in early 2019. Does this mean we’ll soon get to see Johnson’s Black Adam face off against Levi’s Shazam on the big screen?
That question was at the forefront of our minds when we spoke to Johnson at the world premiere of Skyscraper, his newest action thriller. SYFY WIRE asked Johnson directly if he would be appearing in Shazam!, and his response was decisive.
“I’m not in that one,” said Johnson. “At some point the way the DC Universe works is we should, in theory, meet up on the big screen. But who knows?”
Black Adam was originally created in 1945 by Otto Binder and C.C. Beck as an adversary for the hero formerly known as Captain Marvel. In ancient times, the wizard Shazam chose Teth-Adam to be his magically empowered champion for justice. However, Black Adam rejected his calling and attempted to enslave the world before he was exiled by the wizard. In modern times, Black Adam returned to Earth and fought his successor, Captain Marvel.
During his run on Justice Society in the early 2000s, writer Geoff Johns added extra dimensions to Black Adam’s characterization and transformed him from a villain into a compelling antihero who was willing to do anything to protect his homeland. That’s the incarnation that probably attracted Johnson to the character.
