We here at SYFY WIRE love us some Luc Besson, whether it's an action-packed character study like Leon (1994) or a full-blown gonzo sci-fi fantasy like The Fifth Element (1997).
While Lucy (2014) could be seen as the near-perfect marriage of the two camps, Besson's latest, Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets, definitely falls into the second category … and then some! In the videos below, Besson himself talks about how visiting James Cameron on the set of Avatar made him realize that he could bring his seemingly unfilmable vision to life whilst co-stars Cara Delevigne and Dane DeHaan talk about the joys and challenges of traversing their write-director's mad world.
A film like Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets can certainly be made … you just have to take it piece by piece, little by little (oh, and have an enormous budget).
Watch below. Valerian opens on July 21.
