Most of 2018 may be in our rearview mirror, but there are plenty of genre friendly movies coming out this winter. The new cinematic season starts this week, with the release of Overlord, the World War II horror flick from director Julius Avery and producer J.J. Abrams. It's not a Cloverfield tie-in, but we're very intrigued to see these evil Nazi zombies get what's coming to them.
Who will change the future? That's the question posed by Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald. That Harry Potter prequel spinoff is also coming up faster than we can conjure a Patronus. And if J.K. Rowling's Twitter account is any indication, there may be some juicy secrets contained within this film.
Then in December, the floodgates open with Mortal Engines, a Peter Jackson produced adaptation of Philip Reeve's futuristic steampunk novels. If you love world building, then this may be the movie for you. Sony's animated flick Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is going head-to-head with Mortal Engines, and only one film will come out on top!
The Transformers spinoff, Bumblebee, DC's Aquaman, and Disney's Mary Poppins Returns round out the rest of our picks for December. But the winter months of 2019 will also keep us warm with Glass, the highly anticipated follow up to both Unbreakable and Split. We've been waiting nearly two decades for this! Finally, we also look at Alita: Battle Angel and Captain Marvel.
