WATCH: Everything you didn't know about Sonic the Hedgehog 3

By SYFY WIRE Staff

In February 1994, Sega unleashed the third installment of its Sonic the Hedgehog series and introduced the world to Knuckles the Echidna. Next month will be the 25th anniversary of Sonic the Hedgehog 3, and SYFY WIRE is celebrating the occasion in our latest video.

As far as stories go, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 had a fairly simple tale to tell. Sonic and his best bud Tails ended up on a mysterious floating island, where they ran afoul of Knuckles. And by afoul, we mean Knuckles punched Sonic and stole his emeralds. Naturally, it was just a misunderstanding brought about by Sonic's main nemesis: Doctor Robotnik. Incidentally, isn't Robotnik a much better name than Doctor Eggman?

If you've never played Sonic 3, then you're in for a treat. It is absolutely one of the best titles in the series, and Sonic even gets to rock a snowboard. We can't say we're not a little jealous of Sonic for that! Our video also looks into Michael Jackson's contributions to Sonic the Hedgehog 3. Jackson was a huge fan of the character, and he had previously worked with Sega on the Moonwalker games. Jackson was supposed to compose music for the game. Shortly thereafter, Jackson faced legal accusations that put an end to his involvement ... at least officially. Regardless, we're eager to hear Jackson's a cappella demo tape for this game if it ever surfaces!
