Archaeologist. Aristocrat. Explorer. Puzzle solver.

From her first appearance in video games with 1996's Tomb Raider to the latest live-action movie featuring Alicia Vikander in the role, it’s time to take a look back at the legacy of Lara Croft -- and everything you may not have known about her.

For instance: Did you know that Lara was originally envisioned as a female alternate to a lead male character? Fortunately for us, creator Toby Gard preferred her so much that he erased the male version altogether, leaving the way open for Lara to have her own game -- and the rest is, essentially, tomb-raiding history.

Check out the video below, in which we dive into all the various incarnations of Lara Croft that have popped up over the years -- from her original tenure with first developer Core Design, to her first live-action appearance in 2001's Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, to the game reboot of the character in 2013 with Crystal Dynamics, and more.

Here's to you, Lara. May you raid many more tombs in the future.
