It’s Morphin time! Today is the 25th anniversary of the Power Rangers franchise as we know it. Although the Super Sentai series that inspired the franchise date back to 1975, August 28, 1993 marked the debut of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers on Fox. Few could have predicted the show's impact, but it's still going strong after 25 years and various incarnations of the Power Rangers.
As part of our celebration of Power Ranger history, we recently spoke with the creator and a few cast members from the different seasons of the show. But now it's time for some perspective from the fans themselves. During Comic-Con, SYFY WIRE's Jerah Milligan went out to San Diego's Gaslamp District to capture a few fan-on-the-street reactions to the Power Rangers' big anniversary. We even found a few hardcore fans dressed in Power Rangers costumes.
Most of the people we spoke with were largely familiar with the very first Power Rangers team. There's also no denying the popularity of the original Pink Ranger, Kimberly Hart, as portrayed by Amy Jo Johnson. Both men and women idolized Kimberly, although not necessarily for the same reasons. Jason Scott, the original Red Ranger, and Tommy Oliver, the Green Ranger, were also top choices among the fans we encountered.
Surprisingly, at least one fan picked Adam Park as his favorite Power Ranger. Adam was the second Black Ranger on the show after half the cast left over a contract dispute. Jerah could barely believe the selection, but the fan did have a point: Adam was the Black Ranger in the first movie! Fortunately, Zack Taylor, the first Black Ranger, also got his props.
