Later this week, it will once again be time to dive back into the world of J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter. While the main series ended with Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Rowling revisited her fictional universe in 2016 with Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them. Rowling wrote the screenplay, while Harry Potter veteran David Yates returned to direct the film.
As it turns out, Fantastic Beasts was only the first of five movies that will take place decades before the events of the original film. Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald will continue the story of magizoologist Newt Scamander, as he gets drawn into another conflict with the dark wizard, Gellert Grindelwald. But before you dive into that sequel, SYFY WIRE is taking a look back at the first Fantastic Beasts film in 2 minutes or less.
Upon multiple viewings, one of the things that pops out of the movie is that it really is a love story. Or rather, it’s multiple love stories. Cute meets abound when Newt encounters Tina, while Jacob and Queenie fall for each other at first sight. Newt also appears to love his menagerie of creatures, even the annoying ones that escape and unleash chaos in New York. More tragically, the story is also about Credence Barebone, an abused child who is so desperate for love and affection that he befriends a very dangerous man.
Fantastic Beasts also offers a glimpse of American wizard and witch culture that was previously unseen. That said, we’re never going to like using the word “No-Maj” to describe ordinary humans. We’re Muggles, and we’re okay with that!
