Though the series doesn’t actually premiere until December 14th, Syfy has dropped the full pilot for new space opera The Expanse online a few weeks early. Want to see?

The future-set series, which is aiming to full that Battlestar Galactica-sized hole in the world, is set in our Solar System as its been split into a few major factions — led by Earth and settlers who have been working to terraform Mars for decades. The pilot does a whole lot of the heavy-lifting in regards to world-building, and establishes the major settings and themes.

The story bounces between crew members on the ice hauling ship the Canterbury, a settlement of colonists and politicians on Earth. The scope is impressibly ambitious, but never gets too caught up that it loses sight of its characters. Having seen the first four episodes, you can really see where the story is heading, as well as how they continue to enrich the world and ratchet up the tension episode-by-episode.

The 10-episode Syfy (Corporate owner of Blastr -Ed) series is based on the New York Times bestselling book series collectively known as The Expanse, written by Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck (under the pen name James S. A. Corey).
