Sci-fi shorts are all the rage these days, and this new proof-of-concept clip The Garden managed to land a movie deal just three days after being posted online. Want to see what all the fuss is about?
Created by filmmaker E.B. Rhee, the short is a sci-fi reimagining of John Milton’s Paradise Lost. Heady territory, but it works. The story follows a group of explorers who set out into deep space in search of a new home for humanity, because the sun is dying. The short was made for just $30,000, but was good enough for Warner Bros. subsidiary Polymorphic Pictures to pick up with aims to create a sci-fi franchise from the pitch.
The low budget shines through in some of the more ambitious effects shots, but overall, this really does look good. The adventure features everything from a reluctant hero to sea monsters, but the real threat looks like it was lifted straight from the classic FPS Doom. The survivors on the planet are forced to duke it out crazy monsters that look like the terrifying love child of a Predator and Hellboy. With a proper budget, these could make for one heck of an imposing alien race.
