One of the original sci-fi monsters is coming back to life soon, and director Gareth Edwards promises his take on Godzilla will be different than anything that’s come before.
As part of a new video interview released by the studio, Edwards has opened up about his adaptation of the classic monster movie and says his version will stand apart because it presents a more “serious" take on the concept. Considering everything we’ve seen from the trailers, as the world attempts to respond and brace for impact, we’re inclined to believe him.
The film stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson (Kick-Ass), Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad) and Elizabeth Olsen (Avengers: Age of Ultron), and follows the appearance of a massive monster that takes down entire cities with a single tail swipe. Taylor-Johnson leads the cast as a soldier sent into the middle of the attack.

Though the reboot shows a more serious side of everyone’s favorite behemoth, that doesn’t mean they won’t be paying homage to what came before. To that end, the studio has also released an awesome, vintage poster in the classic style:
Edwards’ Godzilla reboot is set to open on May 16.
