He might not have been born when Star Trek: The Original Series made its debut, but Gene Roddenberry’s son Rod is certainly involved with the franchise today.

We recently caught up with Rod Roddenberry, who is serving as a producer on Star Trek: Discovery, to talk about the franchise as a whole and his father’s legacy. Rod reveals he actually came into the world of Trek late (which, admittedly, he wasn’t alive when The Original Series began), but really plugged in once his father passed away. From there, he fell in love with Star Trek and its fandom.

He opens up about the versatility of science fiction as a genre, and the unique ways Star Trek took advantage of it. We also get some subtle teases in regard to what fans can expect from Discovery as well.
