For a character who started out as a one-off bit player in a cartoon, Harley Quinn has displayed a near-limitless amount of staying power. So why do fans love her so much?

We caught up with DC Comics’ Harley Quinn writer Jimmy Palmiotti and artist Amanda Conner at New York Comic Con to talk about the current run, and the character’s legacy as a whole. For them, they see Harley as a wish-fulfillment character in the sense that she does whatever she wants. Get cut off in traffic? Harley will take the car out with a rocket-launcher. That’s what makes her so fun.

The duo also touch on how the character’s profile has risen in recent years, to the point that even legendary comic artist Neal Adams pitched in to draw some art for a recent project. It’s amazing how far Harley has come, from The Joker’s girlfriend to a leading lady in her own right. Not bad for a Batman: The Animated Series original character, right?
