Grae is a multi-talented artist in that she is a rapper, writer, and producer who also happens to be an actress and a comedian. One thing she doesn't make, however, is comic books, although she tells us she "always wanted to."
We accompanied Grae to one of her favorite places in the world — Forbidden Planet in New York City — where we let her loose and followed her among the neatly rowed stacks of books, comic books, and graphic novels.
Her first pick was a pair of Kick-Ass comics. "I grabbed these Kick-Asses first because it was kind of a turn for me in music," Grae explained. "Not the actual comic book, but the movie coming out, and it reminded me how much you can be an everyday superhero without having any powers. I think it made a lot of people uncomfortable, which made me like it even more."
She then chose Douglas Adams' The Ultimate Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy before grabbing a copy of Watchmen: The Annotated Edition (both excellent choices), revealing that her two favorite Watchmen characters are Doctor Manhattan and Rorschach.
Grae also explained how she got her start as a rapper and told us the origin of her stage name (she originally called herself "What? What?" before deciding to change it when she launched her solo career) … which has its ties to a very well-known X-Men character.
The artist also teased some super-secret project she's working on and talked about her rap album with frequent collaborator Quelle Chris, Everything's Fine. Have a look at our exclusive video below for the entire shopping spree and to see which other comic book titles Jean Grae picked up.
