Artist and illustrator Jen Bartel is best known for her sparkling pencil work on IDW's Jem and the Holograms, where her vibrant, neon-splashed art style is appropriately showcased.
The South Korean-born creator has steadily compiled an impressive resume of comic work for Marvel, DC, Archie, and Dark Horse, and also inside the pages of American Illustration and Juxtapoz. In addition to her current duties on Jem, Bartel is working on a new Storm solo series with Black Panther writer Ta-Nehisi Coates, which should roll out later this year from Marvel.
SYFY WIRE sat down with Bartel to watch her bring the mysterious music-maker Jerrica Benton, aka Jem, to life and learn what her first exposure to Jem and the Holograms was, learning about the flashy IDW property when first asked to draw Jem, the particular color palette used, and all about her new creator-owned title, Blackbird.
