Jennifer Lawrence is back in theaters tomorrow (Mar. 2) with a new thriller titled Red Sparrow. The Oscar-winner stars as a Russian prima ballerina forced into a life of espionage. The R-rated film, which reunites her with Hunger Games franchise director Francis Lawrence, had its U.S. premiere in New York City earlier this week, which was attended by several of the movie’s cast and crew.
As you can see in the video above, SYFY WIRE’s Karama Horne was on hand during the Red Sparrow red carpet, where she interviewed stars J-Law, Joely Richardson, Sasha Frolova, and Thekla Reuten. She also spoke with the film’s director, as well as ex-CIA operative Jason Matthews, who wrote the 2013 book Red Sparrow on which the movie is based.
In the video, Lawrence discusses how the physical work she had to do for the spy thriller compared to playing Mystique in the X-Men movie franchise and Katniss in the Hunger Games films. She also mentioned that Red Sparrow doesn’t glamorize the world of espionage. Then her director touched upon the fact that having done three films over four years together allowed Lawrence and Lawrence to make some difficult scenes easier, because of the thrust the two have built up.
Matthews told us that the film’s plot stuck pretty close to the book—although a screenplay is not a novel—and that he acted as technical adviser on the movie. As for the “nudity factor” featured in Red Sparrow, Frolova hopes that viewers will take away a sense of empowerment, and she explains why. There’s a lot more to unfold in our Red Sparrow red carpet video, so don’t forget to check it out above. And if you want to hear more about the film, you can also enjoy our sit-down interviews below.
