DC Comics’ Batgirl and the Birds of Prey series born out of the Rebirth event has been one of the most interesting runs in the entire pull list, so we chatted up creators Julie and Shawna Benson to talk about the series’ origin and where it’s going next.
The sisters talk about how they went back and looked at the history of these characters when they took the gig, and found creative ways to introduce and reintroduce them to audiences for the modern age. They also looked to the great Black Canary and Batgirl series that were already ongoing, so they just built on what was already happening in those ‘books and found a way to bring them together.
Finding time and space for the character moments between Babs, Dinah and Helena when they’re not out kicking butt and taking names was also a priority. The way they bounce things off one another, and the dynamics they’re carving out between these characters, were a major priority. Along with telling a fun story, they're trying to reveal things about them as people, and women in the world.
Up next for the latest arc, the Bensons said they’ll be introducing a new villain into the world of Gotham City. Much like Batman has the Joker, they wanted to create a big bad by the name of Blackbird to play that role for the Birds of Prey.
