In 2012, Dredd was a pleasant surprise for fans of the title character. The adaptation starred Karl Urban as the iconic sci-fi judge, jury and executioner. Unfortunately, the film only grossed $35.6 million worldwide against a $50 million budget. Even worse: Only $13.4 million of that tally came from domestic audiences.
But, despite its box-office outcome, fans are still hoping for a sequel. Dredd has gone on to earn cult status thanks to the DVD market. It's also at the center of a petition that urges filmmakers to produce a followup. So far it's collected more than 100,000 signatures. This type of devotion hasn't gone unnoticed. Urban recently sent out an encouraging video to Dredd supporters.
"I just want to say on behalf of everybody involved with the film Dredd from [writer-producer] Alex Garland to the DNA boys to myself we really really appreciate it and we’re working very very hard to bring you Dredd 2."
