One of DC’s most famous, and most controversial, comics is coming to life as an animated film this month — so we chatted up the folks tasked with making it happen to discuss the challenges of actually translating The Killing Joke from page to screen.

Not surprisingly, it was no easy task, and producer Bruce Timm opened up about the development process and how they worked to stay as close as possible to the comic canon. Not surprisingly, that attention to detail led the film to earn an R rating, a first for DC’s animated fare. They also talked about the efforts to give Batgirl more of an active role in the story, though your mileage may vary on just how much they succeeded.

Batman: The Killing Joke is getting a limited theatrical opening next week, ahead of a traditional digital and Blu-ray rollout.
