We all know that dragons are supposed to breathe fire, not catch fire. Well, Maleficent never got that memo.
Friday afternoon, during the Festival of Fantasy parade at Walt Disney World's Magic Kingdom, an enormous animatronic float of Maleficent in dragon form caught fire. The fire occurred when the dragon arrived in Liberty Square, with about 15 minutes remaining in the parade. No one was injured, and the fire was extinguished quickly. Maleficent is the villain of Disney's Sleeping Beauty. She is an evil fairy who can change shape into a dragon. When she is not invited to the birth of the young princess Aurora, Maleficent curses the child to prick her finger on a spinning wheel and fall into a deep sleep on her 16th birthday.
In 2014, Disney reimagined Maleficent as Angelina Jolie in a live-action film that suggests Maleficent was not evil to begin with. Her childhood love betrays her, which fills her with rage and causes her to curse her love's newborn daughter.
A sequel to Maleficent was announced in 2015, with Jolie returning to the eponymous role. Joachim Rønning (Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales) is directing a script by Noah Harpster and Micah Fitzerman-Blue (Transparent). Ed Skrein (Deadpool) has come on to play the film's villain. Elle Fanning (The Neon Demon) returns to the role of Princess Aurora, and rumored to be joining the cast are Michelle Pfeiffer (Batman Returns) and Chiwetel Ejiofor (Doctor Strange). Production is set to begin this year.
