There's been a sea change in the comics world in the past several years, with the audience diversifying and the characters on the page coming along for the ride. New names like Miles Morales and Kamala Khan have brought new fans into the fold and told new stories that might have been passed over in the past.
One of the driving forces behind all of this has been Sana Amanat. As editor at Marvel Comics, she's overseen the introduction of Miles Morales' new Spider-Man, the passing of the Miss Marvel mantle to a Pakistani-American teenager from Jersey City and the smashing success of Carol Danvers as Captain Marvel. At New York Comic Con, we had the chance to sit down with her to discuss diversity in comics, why it's important and why it's even more important that these new characters not be paragons of virtue.
