BBC America is gearing up for a new spin on Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency, and we sat down with producer Max Landis to talk about what to expect when it arrives. Put simply: It’s about a perfectly weird friendship, which is something Landis has a bit of familiarity with.
Production is already well underway on the series, which stars Samuel Barnett as Dirk Gently and Elijah Wood as his reluctant assistant Todd. If you’re unfamiliar, the series will be an adaptation of Douglas Adams’ (Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy) successful comic novels. For Landis, he said the friendship between Dirk and Todd is the angle he found to make this story a compelling weekly series.
Check out an excerpt from the interview below:
“The first season is basically a love story between Dirk and Todd. It’s an experience, a relationship I’ve had many type times in my life, where an annoying person, me, really wants to be friends with a smarter, darker person [laughs] … That relationship between Dirk and Todd is so different from what we see in these shows.”
The series is set to premiere this fall on BBC America.
