Everyone’s favorite astrophysicist and science superstar is back for another season of StarTalk on National Geographic. Neil deGrasse Tyson's science podcast turned late-night TV show is very close to his heart. That's because StarTalk has given Tyson a chance to discuss expand upon subjects that wouldn’t ordinarily get the spotlight of television coverage. When SYFY WIRE spoke with Tyson about the new season, he shared the very simple way that StarTalk can engage viewers with more knowledge than they probably expected to find.

"We think there are people out there who like science, but they don't know that they like science," said Tyson. "They'll be attracted to the show, not knowing how much science they're going to get by the end. One way to do that is if I interview celebrities. Everybody loves celebrities! ... So if the person I interview is a celebrity, and I talk about ways that science has touched their lives, then you, a fan of that celebrity get to see science manifesting in ways you might not have known."

The first episode of Season 5 aired earlier this week, and it featured Anthony Bourdain in one of his final interviews before his untimely passing.

"It's bittersweet," shared Tyson. "We get to see a side of him that wouldn’t normally be seen or known. Because it's StarTalk, I like to think of it as a geek safe space... so some of the questions were 'do you bring science to your approach to food and the intersection of food and culture?'"

Finally, Tyson briefly spoken about director James Cameron, one of the upcoming guests on StarTalk this season. According to Tyson, he and Cameron have buried the hatchet over their previous disagreement about Titanic. Apparently, Tyson was very specific about the way the night sky appeared on the night the Titanic sank. Tyson not only gave Cameron credit for eventually fixing the scene, he also shared his admiration for Cameron as both a filmmaker and an explorer.
