The Starz adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s American Gods was one of the big surprise hits at San Diego Comic-Con, so we asked the creators about the challenges of bringing this modern classic to life.

We caught up with the cast, as well as Neil Gaiman and Bryan Fuller, to talk all things American Gods. The series will follow a brewing war between the young gods and the old gods, and a man who gets caught in the middle of the chaos. The early footage looks amazing, and the cast and crew say technology and long-form storytelling on TV has finally reached a point where they could actually pull off a show of this type.

Fuller also digs into how the world Gaiman built is something that looks familiar to our own, but wholly different. They also touch on the visual flourishes, which are drawing more inspiration from film that television. So much, in fact, they think movies might steal a few visual ideas from the series, eventually. Ambitious, no?

American Gods is set to hit Starz in 2017.
