District 9 director Neill Blomkamp and his Oats Studios have joined forces with Unity (the creators of a real-time 3D rendering engine often used in videogames) for a follow-up to Unity's award-winning 2016 short Adam.
Written by Blomkamp, Thomas Sweterlitsch (Rakka, Firebase, Zygote), and Jordan Brown — with Blomkamp directing — Adam: The Mirror is a visually stunning seven-minute sci-fi short that takes place in a post-apocalyptic world and follows a newborn cyborg named Adam, a “human whose brain has been erased and imprisoned in a robotic shell” who is “expelled from a walled city with a crowd of his fellow prisoners.”
Made in real time, The Mirror finds Adam on a deadly journey from the walled city to an outpost for refugees, where our hero gets a clue into his past. A third episode, titled Adam: The Prophet, will reveal an antagonistic tribe of survivors, this one made up of humans armed to the teeth.
Blomkamp said in a statement: “I was interested in directing several pieces on the story setup in the first Adam episode, […] the thematic backbone of it is a discussion of where your soul is.” Have a look at the sci-fi short below, then dig into a recent trailer for a sneak peek at The Prophet:
