Though he’s certainly best known for his animated contributions to the Dark Knight canon with Batman: The Animated Series and Batman Beyond, Paul Dini has also used the Bat-mythos to tell a much more personal story.

We caught up with Dini to talk about his recent graphic novel Dark Knight: A True Batman Story, which was inspired by a harrowing incident in his own life. Back in the 1990s, Dini was jumped while walking home one night and beaten within an inch of his life, an incident it took him quite a while to recover from, both physically and mentally.

Now, Dini has channeled that experience into the graphic novel A True Batman Story, an ambitious tale that tackles all of those harrowing emotions into the medium we all know and love, as a graphic memoir of sorts. Dini opens up about the experience itself, and the catharsis the comes from processing those feelings through this outlet.

A True Batman Story is on shelves now.
