Though her day job is Marvel’s director of content and character development, Sana Amanat’s real claim to fame is creating the new Ms. Marvel. So why does she believe Kamala Khan has resonated so much?

Amanat talked about the evolution of the industry itself, and specifically what it takes for a woman to break into comics (or the creative industry in general). She recommended aspiring artists and writers cut out the middleman and just start creating. If you're good, there's a good chance you'll get noticed. She also recommended finding a support system that can provide guidance and mentorship throughout the process.

As for Ms. Marvel’s breakout success, Amanat said it was all about telling a good story at the core — then layering on the fact that’s it’s truly a unique tale from the Muslim-American perspective. As for the template, she said Kamala’s origin story is “really the Peter Parker story.” Which makes sense, because it’s one of the most proven approaches in comic book narratives. It’s just all about finding a new way to tell that story, which they certainly did with Ms. Marvel.
