During last night’s Season 2 finale of Mr. Robot, Paramount Pictures dropped the first footage for their upcoming Ghost in the Shell movie by releasing five intriguing teaser trailers.

The Scarlett Johansson vehicle features the Avengers actress in the role of Section 9 leader Major Motoko Kusanagi and is based on the highly popular cyberpunk anime and manga series created by Masamune Shirow back in 1989.

The movie, directed by Rupert Sanders (Snow White and the Huntsman) from a screenplay by Jonathan Herman (Straight Outta Compton), also stars Pilou Asbæk (Game of Thrones) as Motoko Kusanagi’s right-hand man, Batou; Beat Takeshi Kitano (Zatoichi) as Lt. Col. Daisuke Aramaki; and Michael Pitt (Boardwalk Empire) as the movie’s villain, The Laughing Man. Chin Han, Danusia Samal, Lasarus Ratuere, Yutaka Izumihara and Tuwanda Manyimo round out the cast as the members of Section 9.

The five short teasers have snippets of footage that aren't too revealing, but it looks like they will honor the film’s Japanese roots (it was also filmed in Japan) despite the whitewashing controversy. We also have a first look at Johansson and Beat Takeshi in their respective roles, and I like what I'm seeing so far.

Based on the internationally-acclaimed sci-fi property, “GHOST IN THE SHELL” follows the Major, a special ops, one-of-a-kind human-cyborg hybrid, who leads the elite task force Section 9. Devoted to stopping the most dangerous criminals and extremists, Section 9 is faced with an enemy whose singular goal is to wipe out Hanka Robotic’s advancements in cyber technology.

Ghost in the Shell is slated to open in theaters on March 31, 2017.
