A short film about a mysterious hero and his impact on a would-be criminal has been put into development at Sony Pictures. Get ready for The Flying Man.
The 2013 short film, written and directed by animator and visual effects artist Marcus Alqueres, is a fascinating take on vigilantism and how the world might really react if a guy started flying around a city and bashing in skulls. Alqueres has been working with Chris Collins (Sons of Anarchy, The Wire) to turn the short film into a workable spec script, which is apparently part of the package that attracted Sony.
The story itself is told through the eyes of a would-be criminal having a crisis of conscience, which is at least a unique spin on the tried and true superhero tale. There’s a lot of meat in the concept to mine for a feature script, and assuming they're digging in the right places, this could be a very interesting project. A crime story with a superhero hanging around on the fringes? Yeah, that could be fun.
Here’s the film’s tantalizingly brief synopsis:
A new superhero is coming, only this time it's on his terms. Will he still be considered a hero?
