Tom Kenny is one of the most prolific voiceover actors in the industry, but he may still be best known for the title role in SpongeBob SquarePants. Earlier this year, Kenny debuted one of his newest characters, H.U.E., in Final Space, TBS’ sci-fi animated comedy from executive producer Conan O’Brien. At Comic-Con, Kenny told SYFY WIRE how H.U.E. differs from several of his previous characters.
“H.U.E. is fun because he's so unlike the stuff I usually do,” said Kenny. “ I usually tend to play high energy characters, and H.U.E. is always kind of in control. He's the A.I. of the ship, he wisecracks with Gary, but it's also very parental and calm. He doesn't lose his cool. For me, that's harder than going crazy.”
Kenny was also at Comic-Con to talk about the return of Spyro the Dragon for the 20th anniversary of the original video game. Kenny expressed surprise at the resurgence of the franchise, and joked about rediscovering his Spyro voice.
“Spyro kind of came and went, I thought,” related Kenny. “I knew he had a following, but I hadn’t really done Spyro since 1998-99... It’s fun. It’s like a puzzle that you solve. You’ve got to go back and listen. ‘Wow, I haven’t heard Spyro in a long time,’ trying to still sound young and enthusiastic. ‘Wow, Spyro got old!’”
Kenny also told us about what Spyro fans ask him to sign at conventions. For more, check out the full interview, then let us know your thoughts in the comments!
