Later this year, YouTube Red is taking a deeper dive into sci-fi with Origin, a brand new original series written and created by Mika Watkins. Watkins is a creator on the rise in Hollywood, but even she wasn't quite prepared to see her horrific moments to come to life, according to series director Paul W.S. Anderson.
"She wrote a very scary show set in space, but she's terrified all of the time," explained Anderson while speaking with SYFY WIRE at Comic-Con. "She doesn't really like scary things, which makes her wonderful to work with. Because you execute her vision and then she's terrified by it. So that's when I know I've done my job really, really well, when she's cringing behind her chair at the monitors."
Anderson already has experience with scary space stories as the director of Event Horizon. However, he told us that Watkins' scripts drew him back into the genre for the first time in decades.
"I loved the scripts, it was as simple as that," noted Anderson."I've been tempted to go back into outer space because I went there with Event Horizon, but I've never wanted to go there because I was so happy with that film and this was the show that got me back into space."
Harry Potter veterans Natalia Tena and Tom Felton have two of the leading roles in Origin as Lana and Logan, respectively. Within the series, Lana and Logan are among the passengers who find themselves stuck on a spaceship heading for a distant planet. While speaking with us, Tena teased an upcoming action shootout scene that she filmed, while Felton expressed his admiration for Watkins even when he disagreed with her choices.
