Newly minted Late Show host Stephen Colbert is still riding high on the buzz of his first week, and invited SpaceX founder Elon Musk over to talk about the future of humanity.

The interview is a refreshing one for a late night show, and it's encouraging to see Colbert go a bit outside the box with Musk on just his second episode ever. Considering Colbert is a bit of a geek himself, the conversation quickly turns to Mars — a place Musk is working feverishly to reach thanks to his initiatives with SpaceX, in hopes of establishing a human colony on the Red Planet.

Colbert asks the obvious question: Why we want to go to Mars, since the planet isn’t exactly hospitable to human life. According to Musk, that little quibble is something we can easily overcome with a bit of work. He details the “fast way” (nuke the poles) and the “slow way” (release greenhouse gases) to start terraforming Mars. It’s amazing to see someone talk about space exploration in such casual terms, and when it’s a billionaire like Musk, you can’t help but take him seriously.

Check out the interview below and let us know what you think. Oh, and be sure to catch Musk’s Tesla joke on the new auto-charger. Funny stuff:
