Where would sci-fi and fantasy stories be without friendship? While the hero of each story has their own burden to bear, sometimes a good friend is needed to carry them up Mount Doom or bring them back to life after an untimely death. The real battles aren't necessarily won in conflict. Sometimes, it's the strength of the hero's relationships that carry the day and allow them to go forward to their next adventure.

If there isn't a "best friends day," then we're making one now! And on this occasion, we are celebrating 13 of the best friendships in sci-fi and fantasy films and television shows. Note, that we aren't ranking any of the relationships against each other. They are all equally fantastic in our eyes.

As we alluded to earlier, it was Sam who literally carried Frodo at a critical point in The Lord of the Rings trilogy. But Frodo would have been lost to the ring long before that if his best friend hadn't accompanied him. In terms of trios, Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, and Ron Weasley could face almost anything together. The original Star Trek also had a core trio of friends: Kirk, Spock, and McCoy.

When Buffy sacrificed herself to save her sister, did Willow let that stop her from bringing Buffy back to life? Willow may have pulled Buffy out of Heaven, because she couldn't quite let her go. Gabrielle knew better when Xena finally met her end, although she was also tempted to resurrect her friend.

Even after 41 years, Han Solo and Chewbacca are still among the very best friends in every genre. We love seeing them together so much that we're pulling for Solo to eventually get a follow-up movie.
