The fact that the third season of The Magicians technically starts off without any, well, magic (although Julia still has a tiny spark left in her) may seem a bit strange to longtime fans, but it does set up an epic quest for Season 3.
Stars Olivia Taylor Dudley (Alice), Stella Maeve (Julia), and Jason Ralph (Quentin) sat down with SYFY WIRE's Tara Bennett to talk about this year's grand quest to get magic back, including boarding the Muntjac, a Fillorian magic ship which is a character in and of itself; the excitement Dudley and Maeve felt about finally sharing a storyline together; and what's in store for all three characters.
"This season is a big exploration into everyone's different relationship to magic," Dudley told us. "Like for Alice, she was born into magic. She's had it her whole life. She experienced pure magic as a Niffin and then had no magic. So she's kind of dealing with if she thinks magic is good, bad, like, 'Why do we have it?' And so it's kind of an introspective journey for her this season. And it's a journey for everybody, but in a different way for everyone."
As for Quentin, Ralph explained: "He experienced a lot of emotional turmoil in the second season, and the third season there's a bit of a privilege of distraction. There's a great quest to go on, which allows him to not look backwards and reflect on some of the things that happened and choices that he made, and so I think he becomes like a little lifted [by] that forward momentum."
Season 3 also sees Julia embarking on a journey that's not just about herself. "I think it's great. It's humbling, and it's sort of a good distraction, and also it's nice to see this character being selfless and helping others and not even necessarily wanting this one thing that everybody else seems to want to obtain or have. So it was necessary, I think, and it's nice and it's a long time coming."
